Marcelo Bauer

Marcelo Bauer is a Brazilian journalist with extensive experience writing for newspapers, magazines and with the internet. He worked for more than 15 years in the mainstream press and founded Cross Content in December of 2001, together with Andréia Peres.

He began his career as a political journalist. He was political editor of the magazine IstoÉ and has worked for three of Brazil’s leading daily newspapers: Folha de S.Paulo, O Globo and O Estado de S. Paulo.

With the advent of the internet in Brazil, he began to specialize in research and production of editorial projects in the new media. He joined the first online journalism team at Editora Abril and was responsible for the news content on the BOL/UOL portal (1996-97).

For the magazine Info Exame, he worked initially as an editor and later as editor-in-chief (1997-2000). From 2000 to December 2001, he worked at internet company Idealyze.

At Cross Content, he develops online projects for all the company’s clients. He is the creator of the Cross Content interactive documentaries project and director of  Fora da Escola Não Pode!, Rio de Janeiro  Self-Portrait and Earthquake Kids – Children and Their Rights in a Devastated Haiti.

Bauer has a degree in journalism from Casper Líbero College, and a postgraduate degree in Documentary Film by the Center for Research and Documentation on Contemporary History of Brazil (CPDOC) of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV).

  • 40th Human Rights Journalism Award, Honorable Mention, category Great Reporting – Book for the publication Multiple Dimensions of Child Poverty in Brazil (UNICEF).

2012

  • 2nd Documentary Award by TV Câmara (House of Representatives’ TV) – Winner, short film, with Rio de Janeiro — Self-Portrait.

2011

  • Vladimir Herzog Journalism Award for Amnesty and Human Rights for the interactive documentary Rio de Janeiro  Self-Portrait.
  • Funarte Grant for Critical Reflection and Cultural Production for Internet — Winner with the project Rio de Janeiro — Self-Portrait.

2010

  • Vladimir Herzog Journalism Award for Amnesty and Human Rights for the interactive documentary Earthquake Kids – Children and Their Rights in a Devastated Haiti.

2008

  • Pearl Award (organized by the Custom Publishing Council, New York) for the magazine Ideal Comunitário (Ideal Community), in the category Design – Best Cover – Bronze.

2001

  • iBest Award, “top 3” in the category Information Technology with the TCInet website.

2000

  • iBest Award, “top 3” in the category Information Technology with the TCInet website.
  • Abril Journalism Award, in the category Public Interest Reporting, for the article “Defend Yourself” published in the magazine Info Exame (co-authored with Carlos Machado, Maria Isabel Moreira and Maurício Grego).

1993

  • Sucesu-SP Journalism Award, granted by the Brazilian Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications Users (Sucesu), for the article “PC Tentacles”, about internet and communication networks, published in the magazine IstoÉ.
